Eight New Breeds of Livestock & Poultry Registered in December, 2023

ICAR-NBAGR registered seven new breeds of indigenous livestock species and one synthetic cattle breed in the country. These breeds are – Aravali Chicken (Gujarat), Andamani Duck (Andaman and Nicobar Islands), Anjori Goat (Chhattisgarh); Andamani Goat (Andaman and Nicobar Islands); Bhimthadi Horse (Maharashtra), Andamani Pig (Andaman and Nicobar Islands), Macherla Sheep (Andhra Pradesh), and Frieswal Cattle (Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand). After including these breeds, total number of registered breeds has been reached to 220, including 53 for cattle, 20 for buffalo, 39 for goat, 45 for sheep, 8 for horses & ponies, 9 for camel, 14 for pig, 3 for donkey, 3 for dog, 1 for yak, 20 for chicken, 3 for duck, 1 for geese and 1 for synthetic cattle. Bureau also allotted Accession numbers to these newly registered breeds.

Earlier, ICAR Breed Registration Committee (BRC), the apex body for registration of newly identified animal breeds in the country in its 11th meeting held on 5th December, 2023, approved the registration of these livestock breeds of different states. The meeting was chaired by Dr. J K Jena, DDG (AS), ICAR and also attended by Dr. Abhijit Mitra, AHC, DAHD, Govt. of India, Dr. GK Gaur, ADG (AP&B), ICAR, Dr Neeru Bhushan, ADG (IPTM), ICAR, Dr. BP Mishra, Director, ICAR-NBAGR, Dr R N Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, Dr. VK Gupta, Director, ICAR-NRC on Pig, Dr. AK Tomar, Director, ICAR-CSWRI, Dr. TK Datta, Director, ICAR-CIRB, Dr M Chatli, Director, ICAR-CIRG, Dr. AK Mohanty, Director, ICAR-CIRC, Dr R K Pundir, Head, AGR Division, ICAR-NBAGR & Member Secretary, BRC and other scientists.

Newly registered breeds

Aravali Chicken is a dual purpose breed, distributed in Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Aravalli and Mahisagar districts of Gujarat State. Males are having birchen plumage, while females are having shafty and/or laced plumage. These birds show excellent heat tolerance capacity and very good broodiness, hatchability and mothering ability. Average adult body weight for male is 1990 gm and for female is 1618 gm. Andamani Duck is a dual purpose breed, distributed mainly in Nimbudera to Diglipur region of North and Middle Andaman. Whole body in both drake and duck is covered with black plumage with white marking under the neck extending up to belly. Average adult body weight for drake is 1406 gm and for duck is 1265 gm. Anjori Goat is a medium sized, meat purpose breed. It is distributed in Raipur, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Kanker, Dhamtari, Mahasamund districts of Chhattisgarh state. Majority of animals are brown in colour. It is hardy and well adapted to the local ecosystem. Average adult body weight for male is 35 kg and for female is 28 kg. Andamani Goat is a medium sized, meat purpose breed, mainly distributed  in the Middle and North Andaman island. It is well adapted to the tropical humid climate of the island & are preferred for the excellent chevon quality. Average adult body weight for male is 29 kg and for female is 26 kg. Bhimthadi Horse is distributed in Pune, Solapur, Satara and Ahmadnagar district of Maharashtra. The average height of stallion is about 130 cm and of mare is 128 cm. The predominant coat colour is liver chestnut. They are used for transportation of household material during migration of pastoral communities in the region. Andamani Pig is a native breed of Andaman group of islands. They are sturdy and medium in size and black (mostly) or rusty gray in colour. They are fast runners and evolved to thrive under low-input management system & mainly reared for pork purpose. Macherla Sheep is meat purpose breed, distributed in Guntur, Krishna and Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh along with Padra and Amrabad mandals of Nagar Kurnool districts of Telangana. It is medium to large in size with coat color mainly white with large black or brown patches in the body, face and legs. Frieswal Cattle is a synthetic dairy cattle with Sahiwal (37.5) and Holstein Friesian (62.5) inheritance, developed by ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cattle, Meerut. It is capable of producing about 7000 kg of milk yield in a standard lactation with peak yield of about 41 kg. This breed is acclimatized to all agro-climatic regions of the country.
