ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources on 7th June, 2024 organized 18th State Interface Meet with Goa state, in collaboration with the ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI), Goa. The meet was organized on “Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) of Goa State” under the “Mission towards Zero Non-Descript AnGR of India”. About 50 participants from ICAR, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Govt. of Goa, Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) and progressive farmers participated in the Meet.
Dr. Pradip V. Sarmokadam, Secretary, GSBB, Goa the Chief Guest of the Meet addressed to the delegates on the occasion. and appreciated the efforts of ICAR for documenting indigenous AnGR and cataloguing new germplasm of the state. He also emphasized on the significance of conserving livestock biodiversity and urgent need to link conservation efforts with livelihood of the farmers.
Dr. B.P. Mishra, Director, ICAR-NBAGR, in his introductory address, outlined the priorities and strategies of the Bureau for managing the native AnGR. He also informed about the strategies for documentation of AnGR in the country to reduce the Non-Descript AnGR in the country under the Mission.
Earlier, Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI welcomed the dignitaries participating in the meet and highlighted rich livestock biodiversity of Goa state and adjoining Konkan region. He also stressed upon the need for efforts on conservation and sustainable utilization of native animal genetic resources.
During the Technical Session, Bureau’s scientists team made the presentations, covering various aspects of the AnGR. Dr SP Dixit, Head, Animal Genetics Division delivered the lecture Genetic Mapping for classification and identification of breeds. He also talked about talked about the importance of phenotypic and genetic characterization of animal resources. Dr. Bina Mishra, Principal Scientist made the Role of Animal Genetic Resources in eco-system services; Dr. Indrajit Ganguly, Principal Scientist talked about Trait characterization of Animal Genetic Resources for value addition; Dr. Sanjeev Singh, Principal Scientist delivered lecture on Strategies for survey and characterization of Animal Genetic Resources of Goa. Technical session also comprised of different lectures by the scientists of CCARI. A panel discussion was also held on documentation of AnGR of the Goa state.
Bureau’s Scientists also made survey for AnGR documentation in the state.
