ICAR-NBAGR organized Odisha State Interface Meet at Bhubaneswar

Under the Mission towards zero non-descript AnGR of India, ICAR- National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal organized the 19th State Interface meet on ‘Characterization and Documentation of Animal Genetic Resources of Odisha’ in collaboration with Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department, Govt. of Odisha and Odisha Livestock Resources Development Department (OLRDS), at Odisha State Convention Center, Loka Seva Bhawan, Bhubaneshwar on 26 September 2024.

Shri Gokulananda Mallik, Hon’ble Minister of State, underscored the critical importance of Odisha’s indigenous animal genetic resources for local livelihoods and cultural heritage. He highlighted their economic and ecological significance, calling for collective efforts to safeguard these valuable assets. The Minister also launched a documentary produced by ICAR-NBAGR, displaying the unique traits and relevance of the Chilika buffalo.

Shri Suresh Kumar Vashishth, IAS, Principal Secretary to the Government of Odisha during his address, appreciated the efforts of the Bureau for documenting the AnGR of the state. He further informed that native breeds and populations would be part of the People Biodiversity Register, as an important task being carried out to preserve biodiversity and protect the interest of stakeholders in the state.

Shri Ramashis Hazra, IAS, Director of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, welcomed participants and provided an overview of departmental initiatives designed to foster the development and management of Odisha’s AnGR. His remarks set a positive tone for collaboration among various stakeholders.

Dr. B.P. Mishra, Director of ICAR-NBAGR, delivered a keynote address centered on the mission towards zero non-descript AnGR. He outlined the Bureau’s ongoing efforts to document the non-descript native AnGR in Odisha. Dr. Mishra emphasized the significance of trait characterization, stating it is essential for enhancing the quality of animal produce and ensuring effective management of genetic resources. He also highlighted the significance of Geographical Indication (GI) for animal produce, explaining how it can add value and promote local products. In a noteworthy moment, he handed over the application for Geographical Indication for Chilika curd, developed by the Bureau, to the Minister of State.

Dr. Hadibandhu Bhoi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), OLRDS, Bhubaneswar, welcomed guest and briefed the role of societies for the development of AnGR of Odisha.

During the technical session and panel discussion on AnGR documentation, scientists of NBAGR and senior officers of FARD, OLRDS, Chief District Veterinary officer and members of various animal societies and filed veterinary officers trained at NABGR offered their views.   About 150 delegates of ICAR, FARD, OLRDS, OUAT, and representation of animal societies of Odisha participated in the State Meet.

Further NBAGR Scientists & OLRDS officers visited breeding tract of Chilika buffalo and Binjharpuri cattle and conducted Scientist-Farmers interaction meetings on 27-28 September, 2024.
