To support Breed-wise Livestock Census 2024, Bureau participated in Pilot Survey Workshop

Bureau attended a workshop on ‘Pilot Survey for 21st Livestock Census 2024’ at Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh on 12th June 2024. The pilot survey has been planned in selected regions of Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Odisha states, before conducting 21st Livestock Census (2024). The Census would be conducted during September-December 2024 across the country on all 220 breeds registered by the Bureau. Directors and other senior Officers of Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), Animal Husbandry Departments of these states, Technical attended the workshop, conducted by the Animal Husbandry Statistics (AHS) Division, DAHD, Govt. of India.

Sh. Jagat Hazarika, Advisor, Animal Husbandry Statistics, Govt of India inaugurated the workshop. Addressing the participants, he emphasized over the importance of the Breed-wise survey for various policy formulation for the breeds and urged for accurate census.

Dr B P Mishra, Director, ICAR-NBAGR addressed the delegates and talked about the important outcome of the Census. He informed that ICAR-NBAGR has developed the Breed Watchlist 2022 based on the previous livestock census. Total 38 indigenous breeds were identified at various levels of risk. Bureau has initiated conservation efforts, and cryopreserved the germplasm of 25 such breeds in the Bureau. Further, conservation of all five critical breeds have also been initiated. He emphasized over the accuracy of the Breed-wise census, which would be important for continuous monitoring of the breed diversity, in the country.

Dr Dhanjan Longri, Director, Dept. of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Services and Dairy Development, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh welcomed the delegates on the occasion. Dr V P Singh, Director, AHS also welcomed all the delegates attending the workshop, and described about phases of the Census. Team of NDLM showcased mobile applications for the enumerators, supervisors, District Nodal officers and State Nodal Officers, as users for conducting breed-wise Census. Dr S K Niranjan, Principal Scientist & Nodal Officer at NBAGR described identifiable features of the indigenous breeds of the states under the survey.
